Damn near killed 'em!!

Well, session 2 of the campaign took a nasty turn last night. The PC started heading toward the Foehammer Spires to see about the goblin-bat problem. Along the way they found a body in the river that, upon searching revealed it had been bound up for a time, and had ultimately died from exsanguination. They proceeded to the base of the mountain and started climbing the steps up to the cave entrance, being very careful and paranoid along the way. I tried to ratchet up the suspence by mentioning that some of them could not shake the feeling of being watched. Although they could not see anyone.

They lit up a coin using a light spell, threw it into the cave entrance and proceeded inside. Unbenknownst to the party, there was a spyhole in the wall of the entrance cavern. Behind was a goblin sentry. Upon seeing the PCs enter and start up the stairway toward the lairs common room, he ran to alert his buddies who had prepared an elaborate trap. As the PCs moved up the winding hewn stairs they came upon a 10' deep pit. At the bottom was leaves, twigs and other detritus belying the spikes which lined the pit.

Saige (Ranger) took advantage of the natural walls of the cave and used the handholds to climb the wall and pass over the pit safely. Roland the Wanderer (wizard) followed by feystepping his way across. Then came Jazeera (warlock) and Korgan (Paladin). At this point Korgan took the point. Brin (cleric) and Theodric (Warlord) were in the process of climbing thru the pit. Suddenly, an Ogre wreathed in blue flame and making a low moaning sound appeared around the corner and attempted to Bull Rush Korgan and the rest of the party backwards into the pit. Dwarven Stability came in handy as the Paladin was able to stand tough against the Ogre and keep him from knocking any of the party back into the pit. While struggling with the ogre, Korgan was able to perceive that the ogre was tied into an elaborate harness which was connected to the ceiling. Not only that, but upon closer inspection Korgan realized the Ogre was already dead. About this time the goblins behind the ogre corpse came into view and began rainign javelins and corssbow bolts down on the party. Korgan used a tremendous feat of strength to topple the ogre into the path of the 2 javelin wielding goblins, but they deftly moved aside and did not get pinned underneath.

The group handily dispatched the 2 javelin fighters, however the goblin with the crossbow took off into the darkness behind.

Once those goblins were dealt with, several PCs heard noises coming from the darkness beyond. Roland made another light coin and threw it to light up the area. It revealed a largish chamber with 10 goblins of various kinds.

more to follow when i get home......

Keep on the Shadowfell

Got the module on Monday and ran the first session last night. It went REALLY well. Everyone seemed into it. Such a relief since our last few 3.5 sessions have been not that exciting as everyone was looking forward to 4e.

I need to work on my monster tactics a bit. I keep forgetting to shift kobolds with a minor action. It just feels like they were pushovers for me. Practice practice practice I guess. Since I will have an entire week to prep the next session I want to really nail it cold and provide a lot of encounter fun for the players. One of the fights will be against 18 or so kobolds. That is going to be challenging.

HowManyOfMe.com

There are
21,457
people with my name
in the U.S.A.

How many have your name?

campaign outline

I was reading the newest Dungeoncraft article today and it got me to thinking that I need to organize my thoughts a little better about the campaign and what I would like to accomplish. Perhaps the way to do this would be to make a very loose outline. I do have to make sure and keep lots of room open for adventures based around the PCs desires and goals and not just the story arc I want to do.

Level 1-2 * Bring group together and have them investigate the problems in the Wildlands. Hopefully this will bring about a long term ongoing villain in the form of the escaped BBEG.

Level 5 * introduce the group to the cleric that will play a large part in the Paragon Tier story arc

Level 10 or 11 * Introduce the major story arc and get the PCs interested. Will need to plant clues as to what is going on to draw the PCs in as the plot is happening VERY much below the surface of normal events. Perhaps an interloper is found acting as a thrall to the shadow BEGs.

Level 19 or 20 * seem to wrap up the major story arc, but in reality unleash an even majorer world changing event. (This should introduce the world hook for campaigns in the future)

Epic Tier * Need something to fill this tier, will have to come up with something. Never have DMed a campaign anywhere close to the scope they speak of in Epic.

Damn customers keep calling guess I need to get back to work. If anyone is curious what I plan for the major story arc, see my earlier posts (not that anyone reads this anyway)

d'oh!!!

I am an idiot.

I bought CC3 so I could make maps for the upcoming campaign. I made what I think is a great first map (http://winterheath.wikispaces.com). Well, Thursday I started having a problem with CC3 that was causing it to crash. SO I contacted tech support. While I was waiting for a response I decided to uninstall and reinstall the program and see if that helped. I was careful to find and save my map in a different folder so it didnt get zapped away. Long story short... the map I saved was the .jpg version, not the actual map file version that I could make changes to. So, my map is gone.

Joe suggests this morning I try Windows System Restore and go back to before I uninstalled. So tonight I will try that and hope for the best.

I have made the decision to go with the world hook of darkness. I think I can pull it off. And heck if one or more of the players/PCs want to try to "solve" the problem, who am I to stand in their way?

I put the first couple of paragraphs describing the phenomenon on the opening page of the wiki under the area map. http://winterheath.wikispaces.com

some random thoughts from last night

Dave bugs me a lot sometimes. I mentioned that I would like everyone to submit 3 character concepts to me so I can put together a party for the 4e campaign and he had to be all "I can't do that until the books come out and I can see all the options as far race, class and available powers, etc". What a load of BS! Then when Joe and I told him that he should be thinking concept first, then translate that to race, class, etc he was all "That's just the way I have always done it". God how I hate that phrase. He doesn't seem to realize how much of a pain that is for me to start planning things out.

This idea of me putting the party together came from Joe in the first place. He did this with the current campaign (the last 3.5 campaign we will ever play). We all submitted 3 concepts not more than 2 or 3 sentences and he decided what would be a good mix for the party and what characters had stories he would like to develop and then we did character creation. It worked out really well. And I think I would like to try it for the first 4e campaign.

But along came Dave. I suppose I could get them from everybody else and just not worry about his story because I cant be asked to come up with stuff specifically for him on the fly.

I would liek to start doing some monster creation of my own, I am just not sure how to start. I feel like I have a good handle on the mechanics and can reverse engineer what I have seen so far from DDXP, just a little hesitant to take the leap.

How important is a world-hook? By world hook I mean something that sets a campaign world apart from every other campaign world. Dark Sun had its gritty feel world-hook, Eberron has its post-war reshaping society world-hook. Those are just the first 2 examples that come to mind.

Contrast these with campaign worlds like Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk and I would throw in Middle Earth. These worlds provide a backdrop of various levels of activity that act as a back drop for whatever campaign the DM decides to run. In other words, except for the place names and the NPCs names they aren't really "specific" campaign worlds.

Neither one do I think is better than the other. The whole reason I brought this up is to wrestle with the concept of which one I want my campaign world to be. So far, it is definitely in the FR, GH, ME vein. It is a milieu waiting to be populated and interacted with by the PCs. Do I want to add a world -hook?

The campaign I was planning before, and didn't get to run, had what I think was an interesting hook. The way the moons and the Sun were arranged around the planet caused a total eclipse 3 to 4 times a year lasting for a few days, never a set amount. The times of the eclipses to start was predictable and foretellable using a mixture of observation and divination. However, the time when the eclipse would end was not known nor could it be divined. What this meant was that the denizens of the Underdark who were predisposed to wanting to gain sway over the surface world, Illithids and Drow I am looking right at you, would have basically free reign during the days the lights were out. But, these same Underdarkers would often be trapped on the surface when the eclipse came to an end.

A friend of mine related it to the effect of every prison in America opening their doors 3 or 4 times a year and letting the prisoners run free, but collecting most of them a few days later and returning them to their cells.

The more I think about it the more this sounds like a very PoL type of setting, and maybe I should go ahead and use it this time since I didn't get to before.

am I the one that's being thick?

Over at the ENWorld forum, someone asked whether you could get the secondary effect of force orb without hitting with the primary effect. Someone else then suggested that you could merely aim the spell to hit a square rather than targeting the creature in the square. I have been arguing that this is against the spirit of the spell and therefore exploitive and reeking of cheese.

It seems like people want to allow enough wiggle room that this essentially becomes a mini-fireball spell, which is obviously not the intent of the spell.

Can someone back me up on this?

just some thoughts as I "work" and think about 4e

I want to make sure there are some interesting set pieces in my 4e campaign to take advantage of certain abilities the monsters may have, as well as to set the stage to take advantage of certain PC abilities if I find some that are extremely <s>cool</s> nifty that don't get used often enough.

We are going to start running thru last years D&D Open from GenCon this week on Tuesdays. This will be our last hurrah in 3.5e. I am amazed to hear Kris say he now has 0 desire to play 3.xe ever again. I thought myself and maybe Joe were the only ones that felt that way. I think Dave will come around as we play more and more 4e.

Hopefully, the prospects we have for new players will pan out as I would like to have 5 as a minimum when we start 4e. 6 would be great also.

wow, has it really been a year and a half?

Been abusing this too long. Time to start writing in here regularly. If for no other reason than to get back in the habit since I am going to have to be able to write and create an entire campaign once 4e comes out.

I have the campaign so far over at http://winterheath.wikispaces.com, such as it is. I have the skeleton laid out and now I need to start throwing in the fleshy bits.

I know I need to flesh out more of what goes on in town and who does what goes on. I just haven't been inspired on that level yet really. I will make a more concerted effort this afternoon after I have done some housecleaning. Maybe that mindless task will allow some brainstorming.

Anyway, I think I need to start with the Baron, his family, his staff and move from there to the Captain's Men. Eventually I will need to come up with some ideas for mentors and such but how do I do that before we have characters to attach those mentors to?

I am also conflicted as to whether or not to have a plot at all until the characters reach 10th level or so. I want them to feel free to stretch their wings and just see where that takes us. But, sometimes these players can be so uninspired/uninspiring that I am afraid that might just be boring. The plot I have in mind at first blush sounds like it is probably a paragon level plot that will carry on into epic levels.

My computer at home is giving me fits, I may have to reinstall windows from scratch because of some of the issues. *sigh* Daves Tuesday night game leaves a lot to be desired, and I dread the thought of Mike taking over when he is done. The whole FG thing isnt going to work well unless Greg pulls his head out of his ass and I get my sound working.

I really need to develop some discipline and get my shit together and drop some of this weight. I want to get back into some kind of shape just so I dont feel so worn down all the time.

today's stuff

Work is pretty slow lately, might as well use the time to get caught up.

Watched the baseball hearing in Congress all last night. All in all I think it was a positive thing. The league and the Union were told, in no uncertain terms that we are mad as hell and not going to take it any more. I think they have taken some baby steps and now we have to see the system, as explained yesterday will work. I hope so.

Excited to see that Spamalot begins its Broadway run today. I really hope I can get down there to see it.

My tourney picks didnt go so well yesterday, 10 out of 16 on day 1 doesnt bode well, although I didnt lose any teams that I picked to go to the third round.

Saw 2 flocks of geese heading North yesterday as I drove home, thats the best thing I saw all week.

I am now 4 of 7 in the iTunes Pepsi contest. Take that Justice.

Well, they actually want me to do work now, better get at it.

QUOTE FOR THE DAY: "If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals -- if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is." - Ronald Reagan. Ah, those were the days. (Hat tip: Pejman).

Gotta love em!

Just kickin at the puter, then off to get a haircut. Me and the LW are driving up to Skaneateles to look for some yarn for some project of hers, and to get out of the house.

I hope to try a few things this afternoon to fix my freezing issues. If I dont have it fixed this weekend I am taking it to someone who gets paid for such things.

So, my "ally" germany has taken up with the prince of lies in our diplomacy game. This does not bode well. I have mended fences with France and it looks like Turkey has finally seen that Austria cannot be trusted. I think the best we can hope for this year is to break even by exchanging builds with Austria. Then next year I think we can make some definite inroads into his defenses. I think the situation in the game right now is similar to WW2 just prior to the invasion of sicily. Or, as everyones favorite wizard said it, "I come to you now, at the turn of the tide"

Pre-haircut shower time.

Sitting at work, on "lunch", waiting for food to arrive. Wish there was some music in this place. I think my energy level would really pick up today if i could just crank some tunes and get the blood pumping a bit.

Very impressed with Greg's DMing so far. The dungeon he has us at right now is compelling and we are only 4 rooms in!!

This PC freeze on my home machine is really starting to piss me off. I think I am going to take it out to be worked on next week.

Sometimes the people I work with make me want to just stand up and scream at them. We are waiting for for one of the ladies in accounting to bring us our lunches, fish and chips from one of the local diners, our Friday tradition. But all they can do is sit and whine that she isnt here with the food yet, when not a single one of them wants to go out in the arctic waste that is Central New York and bring back the food. Makes me start to believe in abortion, at least the retroactive kind.

But enough negativity.

Bard? where does that come from?

I Am A: Neutral Evil Human Thief Bard

Alignment:
Neutral Evil characters believe in Number One. Their personal gain takes precedance over all else, and they will work with whomever necessary and whatever institutions necessary to further their own goals.

Race:
Humans are the 'average' race. They have the shortest life spans, and because of this, they tend to avoid the racial prejudices that other races are known for. They are also very curious and tend to live 'for the moment'.

Primary Class:
Thieves are the most roguish of the classes. They are sneaky and nimble-fingered, and have skills with traps and locks. While not all use these skills for burglary, that is a common occupation of this class.

Secondary Class:
Bards are the entertainers. They sing, dance, and play instruments to make other people happy, and, frequently, make money. They also tend to dabble in magic a bit.

Deity:
Mask is the Neutral Evil god of rogues, thieves. He is also known as the Lord of Shadows. He appears as a lithe man, shadowed, wearing dark clothing. His followers believe in stealth and wariness. They wear black and gray clothing, and carry weapons and armor similar to that of a thief. They frequently wear masks to conceal their identity. Mask's symbol is a dark, checkered mask.

Find out What D&D Character Are You?, courtesy ofNeppyMan (e-mail)

My "ally", Germany, has lost his mind. His orders make no sense, even if his intent is to turn against me they make no sense. I can only assume, until I find out otherwise, that he talked to the prince of lies and made some arrangements that Austria did not follow thru on. Methingks it is time to abandon Germany and try to sway Turkey into working with me against Austria. This I also find peculiar, Turkey, on his very own blog, has referred to Austria as his "sworn enemy" yet he continues to belive Austria when everyone in the game should be able to tell that Austria is completely incapable of keeping his word. Strange...

it's been awhile

The diplo game is going mostly well. I have to decide whether or not it is time to stick a fork in France and tell him he's done or not. Germany is a stalwart allie thus far, and Turkey has hung in valiantly. Austria is still on the march, but that smug bastard cannot be allowed to win.

Ars went pretty well last weekend. At times i feel like some people are bored while I deal with others, but everyone keeps telling me they are having a good time. I thought the fight with the demon went well from a story perspective, but I may have made it be defeated too easily. I didnt want to kill them, merely to provoke their curiosity as to why a demon was in that barn, but no one bit. They just went on to the next thing. Sometimes I have such a hard time figuring out how people are motivated. I try to plan things to picgue their interest thinking that something is what I would investigate further, and then we play and nothing. Oh well, time to move on. I planted the seed for the British coming closer and an upcoming tribunal to plan for.
